Old Logo
Paignton & District Chamber of Commerce | Frankman
One of our proudest pieces of work from 2024 so far began in May, where Creative Director Mark met with the new Chair (Simon Steer) and the team at Paignton & District Chamber of Commerce to discuss one clear goal: the redesign of their logo in a way that truly puts across their mission and values in a fun and innovative way.
The Paignton & District Chamber of Commerce are all about supporting and promoting the interests of local businesses, providing networking opportunities to develop business contacts and acting as the voice of business for the Paignton area.
Crafting a Logo Rooted in Member Insight
To get things rolling, Mark hosted a workshop where the members could share their thoughts on the old logo, their likes and dislikes, and explore what the Paignton & District Chamber of Commerce is about at its core.
This session was key in guiding the design process and ensuring that the new logo would resonate with both the members and the wider community.
Concept Stage
With this input in hand, Mark got to work.
He created over 30 pages of ideas and concepts, drawing inspiration from the rich conversations he’d had with the members. Every detail was considered to ensure the new logo was a true reflection of Paignton & District Chamber of Commerce’s identity.
One of the main elements to consider when building your brand image on a wider scale, and in turn designing your logo, is your brand colour scheme. Certain colours provoke different emotions for your potential consumers and clients, so it is important to think about the brand personality you want to portray. Do you want to come across as peaceful? Exciting? Authoritative? Colours have a powerful effect on how people perceive a brand, so it was important to select a palette that would communicate the right message.
The Importance of Colour
For the Paignton & District Chamber of Commerce, a blend of blue and orange was chosen.
When rebranding, a main concern we address is not to deviate too far from the brand’s original colour scheme. From experience, we usually advise sticking with the same or similar colour palette, but maybe introduce a new colour to add depth or additional impact. With Paignton & District Chamber of Commerce, it was suggested to keep the blues to echo the sea and the skies of the South West, as well as to align with the previous logo colour. We added an orange to reference the beach and the sun, as well as add a bit of brightness. They wanted to move away from the corporate image they previously had and come up with something new and exciting.
We didn’t just pick these colours because they look good (although they do!). They’re also carefully chosen to reflect the spirit of the area and to stir up the right emotions.
Take blue, for instance—it’s all about trust and reliability. Think of brands like Dell, Intel, and Facebook. Then there’s orange, which brings warmth and friendliness, just like B&Q, Amazon, and McDonald’s.
So, these colours don’t just look great—they make you feel something too!
Incorporating Community Elements
During discussions with the members, they were set on keeping the pier shape in their logo as a staple of the Paignton community and an attraction for both tourists and locals.
However, they felt like their logo was solely focused on the pier and not the wider community as they intended. Therefore, we suggested incorporating just a section of the pier instead to show the progression and evolution of the iconic shape, but also introduce the sea waves element to bring it together.
Mark not only created one logo, he created a series collection of logos in different variations, shapes and colours to use across different platforms and marketing channels. For example, social media dictates a square profile picture, whereas physical materials such as office stationary may command a longer version of the logo. For digital purposes, the logo needs to work on different coloured backgrounds, which is why it is important to have a main image as versions that work against different brand colours.
The final project has produced a logo that not only perfectly portrays Paignton and District Chamber of Commerce’s mission and values, but also the community of Paignton as a whole.
